Madison McFerrin

We’ve had her new album, SCORPIO, on repeat here at the office, and we have to admit: we’re hooked. There is a particular magnetism to artists who have taken the time to figure out who they are, and who allow that process to seep into their music. Madison McFerrin is one of those artists, and we are incredibly excited to welcome her to Torshov.

SCORPIO grew out of the aftermath of a relationship coming to an end. But McFerrin does not simply sing about loss and finding herself again. She lets us hear what it sounds like when someone tries to piece themselves back together. The result is a rare blend of tenderness, humour and an increasingly powerful sense of self.

And yes, she is the daughter of jazz legend Bobby McFerrin. But that is not necessarily the most interesting part of the story. What fascinates us is the way she has spent years developing a musical language entirely of her own. Her voice can be delicate and almost whispered one moment, then open up with a confidence that fills the entire room. The San Francisco-based artist, vocalist and songwriter moves between soul, jazz, R&B and a touch of house — a combination we think many of you are going to love.

Wonderland describes the album as groove-driven and subtly cinematic, with confident and exploratory songwriting. It is a fitting description of an artist who can deliver the big vocal moments, but who also knows when holding back can be even more powerful.
