Sanam Marvi
Sanam Marvi has been tutored by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and is a star of Coke Studio, reaching diaspora audiences and music fans across the world. Now she is finally coming to Oslo World and Cosmopolite.
Marvi is one of the most revered living interpreters of Sufi, spiritual and folk songs from Pakistan. Performing lyrics in urdu, sindhi, punjabi and saraiki, Marvi has a forceful and unforgettably raspy voice. Her interpretations find common ground between popular culture and Sufi spirituality.
Marvi was born in the Sindh province in Pakistan. She grew up poor, but received musical training at an early age from her father, a faqir. He introduced her to Hindustani classical music, and later on, she got training from masters such as the legendary Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and the iconic folk singer Abida Parveen. Marvi got her big break in Pakistan when she appeared on the popular TV show Virsa Heritage. Later, she also made seminal appearances at Coke Studio Pakistan. This secured her a position as one of the finest performers in classical and folk genres in her home country – but also laid the groundwork for what she is today: A global performer, travelling the world, bringing both the ecstasy and the profound poetry of this music to diaspora audiences and music fans of all kinds. This year, and in collaboration with the Mela Festival, Oslo World are proud to welcome her to Norway.
The concert is presented in collaboration with Théâtre de la Ville Paris and Oslo Mela Festival.
Note: The concert will only have alcohol free serving.
