An Ode to the Missing: Film Screening I’M STILL HERE and Concert by Bugge Wesseltoft

On the festival’s third day – Saturday, November 8 – the event «An Ode to the Missing» takes center stage. The evening begins with a screening of Walter Salles’ moving film I’M STILL HERE (FREMDELES HER), followed by a concert with Bugge Wesseltoft and a star-studded ensemble performing a tailor-made, original composition created especially for the occasion.

The film is in Portuguese with Norwegian subtitles.

About the film I’M STILL HERE
Brazil, 1971. Life pulses on the sunny beaches of Rio de Janeiro, but in the shadows the military dictatorship tightens its grip. Political opponents are monitored, persecuted, and disappear without a trace. The Paiva family – Rubens, Eunice, and their five children – live in an idyllic beach house in Rio, surrounded by friends. One day, armed men knock on their door and take Rubens away for questioning. Suddenly Eunice is left alone with the children, forced to fight with everything she has to keep the family together and to seek justice for her husband. The film won the Oscar for Best International Feature in 2024.

About the concert «An Ode to the Missing» 
Bugge Wesseltoft brings together a star-studded lineup of Norwegian and Brazilian musicians to perform a commissioned work dedicated to all those who disappeared under Latin American dictatorships between the 1960s and 1980s. A musical piece that embraces both the horrors of the past and the hopes of the future, on a night that will make us want both to weep and to dance.

The ensemble reunites Bugge with Brazilian artists Marlui Miranda and Rodolfo Stroeter, who performed a commissioned score for the Brazilian silent film LIMITE at Films from the South 15 years ago at the Norwegian Opera House. Together with a stellar team of Norwegian musicians, they return to collaborate at Cosmopolite for the festival’s 35th anniversary, drawing inspiration from Walter Salles’ quiet yet powerful tale of the true nature of dictatorship.

After the film screening and concert, there will be a DJ set featuring exclusively Brazilian music curated by Anja Bajer.

Anja has quickly established herself as one of the city’s most sought-after DJs, and has curated a number of Brazilian-themed nights as part of her work. Among them are Clube do Becco together with Erlend Mokkelbost, the afterparty for Marcos Valle at Blå, and Azymuth at Parkteatret.

The 35th anniversary gala of Films from the South will be a unique evening not to be missed. The event is supported by the Brazilian Embassy in Oslo.
