Mulatu Astatke - Farewell Tour
Bar Souk åpner 18:00
A musical chapter is coming to a close. In 2025, legendary artist Mulatu Astatke embarks on his final international tour – a rare chance to experience the man who shaped an entire genre.
As the creator of Ethio jazz – a distinct fusion of Ethiopian traditional music, jazz, Latin rhythms, and funk – Mulatu has led a musical movement that has inspired generations. For over six decades, he has taken his music from the streets of Addis Ababa to the clubs of London, the stages of New York, and festivals around the world.
His journey began with classical music studies in the UK, followed by jazz training in the US, before returning home to create a completely new sound. Drawing from Ethiopia’s unique pentatonic scales and blending them with jazz instrumentation and structure, Mulatu forged a musical language that both honors tradition and crosses borders.
He has collaborated with artists like Duke Ellington and Alice Coltrane, been sampled by Kanye West and Nas, and performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages. He’s lectured at Harvard and MIT, modernized traditional instruments, and established jazz education and venues in Addis – always driven by music.
In 2025, he bids farewell to the stage with a new album, Mulatu Plays Mulatu, recorded in London and Addis with his full live band and guest musicians from Ethiopia. The album will be released on September 25.
This will be a night of deep rhythms, hypnotic grooves, and living musical history. A final chance to experience the Father of Ethio Jazz – live.
