Experience West African magic at the Oslo African Pilgrimage Festival – a unique celebration of culture, identity, and community! Join us as we shine a spotlight on a living tradition with music, dance, gastronomy, and stories that connect the past with the present. The festival is created for West African communities in Norway – and for you who wish to discover the hidden treasures of a vibrant cultural heritage.
We are proud to present the legendary Jaliba Kuyateh – the “king of the kora” – who, together with the Kumareh Band, blends traditional rhythms with modern pop to create the captivating “kora pop” sound. In addition, Mozambique-born jazz artist Ivan Mazuze will add an exotic touch with his unique blend of African rhythms and modern jazz.
Join us as the legend from Gambia, Jaliba Kuyateh & The Kumareh Band, take the stage with their groundbreaking sound – the modern interpretation of traditional kora, known as kora pop. Jaliba, Gambia’s very own kora king, was introduced to the instrument as a child and has since captivated audiences with his gripping melodies and infectious rhythms. With countless international tours and prestigious awards – including being named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and Gambia’s “Man of the Year” – he and his band have forged a musical legacy that bridges the traditions of the past with the pulse of the present.
At this concert, the experience is further enriched by guest artist Ivan Mazuze – an award-winning saxophonist and composer from Mozambique, now based in Norway. With his unique ability to blend African rhythms, Arabic and Indian musical heritage with modern jazz improvisation, Ivan has wowed audiences on international stages and festivals. His critically acclaimed album, among others Penuka, stands as a living testament to how music can build bridges across cultures.
Together, these two musical giants create an unforgettable concert experience where tradition meets innovation. Let yourself be carried away by the soulful tones of the kora and the dynamic energy of modern jazz – a journey through rhythms, stories, and global cultures that will undoubtedly move both heart and soul.
