Jorga Mesfin

We have a great love for Ethiojazz, and this late summer evening, we want to highlight a fantastic young talent who we believe will leave a significant mark on Ethiopian music in the years to come.

Jorga Mesfin is an Ethiopian saxophonist considered one of Ethiopia's best new musicians and a protégé of the legendary Mulatu Astatke. He is a self-taught musician with influences ranging from the spirit and innovation of jazz to the ancient and diverse sounds found in Ethiopian music.

On May 24, he will release his debut album, "The Kindest One," on the Ethiopian label Muzikawi.

As a professional performer since the age of 17, Jorga's career has included performances with Tsegaye Gebremedhin, Carolyn Beard Withlow, The Last Poets, Vijay Iyer, Wayna Wondossen, Kirk Whalum, Takana Miyamoto, Gizze Reggae Band, Dionne Farris, Aster Aweke, Mahmoud Ahmed, and of course, Mulatu Astatke.

ለኢትዮ ጃዝ ታላቅ ፍቅር አለን፤ በመጪው በጋ አንዱ ምሽት ደግሞ በቀጣይ አመታት የኢትዮጵያ ሙዚቃ ላይ ጉልህ አሻራውን እንደሚያሳርፍ የምናምንበትን አንድ ድንቅ ባለተሰጥኦ ልናነሳ ወደድን፡፡ 

ጆርጋ መስፍን ከኢትዮጵያ ዘመናዊ ሙዚቀኞችና አቀናባሪዎች አንዱ እና ከክብር ዶክተር ሙላቱ አስታጥቄ የሙዚቃ ጥበብን የቀሰመ ኢትዮጵያዊ ሳክስፎኒስት ነው፡፡ ጆርጋ ሙዚቃን እራሱን በራሱ ያስተማረ ሙዚቀኛ ሲሆን የጃዝ መንፈስና ፈጠራ እንዲሁም በኢትዮጵያ ሙዚቃ ውስጥ የሚገኙ ጥንታዊና ብዝኃነት ያላቸው የኢትዮጵያ የሙዚቃ ቅኝቶች ተጽእኖ አሳርፈውበታል፡፡

ጆርጋ ግንቦት 16 ቀን 2016 ዓ.ም ‘ከሁሉ የላቀው ደግ’ የተሰኘ አልበሙን ኢትዮጵያዊ የሙዚቃ አሳታሚ በሆነው ሙዚቃዊ አማካኝነት ለቋል፡፡ 

ከ17 ዓመቱ ጀምሮ ፕሮፌሽናል አርቲስት የሆነው ጆርጋ እንደ ፀጋዬ ገብረመድህን፣ ፕሮፌሰር ሀይሌ ገሪማ፣ ኬሮሊን ቢርድ ዊትሎው፣ ዘ ላስት ፖዌትስ፣ ቪጄ አየር፣ ወይና ወንደሰን፣ ከርክ ዌይለም፣ ታካና ሚያሞቶ፣ጊዜ ሬጌ ባንድ፣ ዲዮን ፌሪስ፣ አስቴር አወቀ፣ መሀሙድ አህመድና ዶክተር ሙላቱ አስታጥቄን ካሉ እውቅ አርቲስቶች ጋር በጋራ ሰርቷል፡፡
