From playing the piano in church as a twelve-year-old in Brazilian city Recife, to becoming one of the leading young talents in jazz piano today, Amaro Freitas’ love for both afro-Brazilian rhythms and Coltrane, Parker and Monk has taken him where he is today.

The transformative moment came at age 15 when Freitas stumbled across a DVD of a Chick Corea concert, “he completely blew my mind, I’d never seen anything like it, but I knew that’s what I wanted to do with a piano”. He studied day and night on an imaginary piano because he did not have access to one at home. As a 22-year-old musician, he was one of the most sought-after jazz pianists, and had a regular performance at the jazz club Mingus. Freitas is now a rising star in Brazilian music.
