Ahmed Fakroun

Ahmed Fakroun is regarded as one of the most distinctive figures in North African popular music. Born and raised in Benghazi, Libya, he formed his first band in the early 1970s. As both a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, he developed a musical expression that combined Algerian raï, Libyan folk traditions, and European art rock.

Throughout the 1980s, Fakroun shaped a unique direction within Arabic electronic pop — where synth arrangements meet traditional instruments such as oud, bağlama, ney, and darbuka. His album Words of Love / Mots d’Amour (1987) stands today as a key reference point for this movement, and tracks like “«Soleil Soleil» and «Njoom Al Leyel» spread far beyond North Africa.

However, political restrictions and years in exile temporarily halted his international career. At the same time, his music continued to resonate strongly across the Arab world, and many of his songs later became part of the soundtrack to the Arab Spring.

In recent years, his work has experienced a remarkable revival. Habibi Funk– one of the world’s most respected DJs and curators of Arabic and North African musical heritage – has brought renewed attention to Fakroun’s catalogue as a central example of the region’s electronic and genre-blurring pop. As a result, his releases have become highly sought-after collector’s items, and he has performed sold-out concerts across much of the world.

Fakroun is often described as a musical bridge-builder – an artist who seamlessly weaves together Arab melodic traditions and Western pop, while carrying with him a story of artistic resistance, identity, and belonging.

And now, he finally comes to Oslo.

A rare opportunity to experience a seminal voice in the modern musical history of the Maghreb — live.
