Bixiga 70

Bixiga 70 is considered one of Brazil’s most distinctive instrumental bands, known for their unique blend of afrobeat, Brazilian rhythms, jazz, funk, and Latin influences. Since forming in São Paulo in 2010, the collective has built a reputation for energetic and tightly executed live performances, driven by a powerful horn section, intricate layers of percussion, and a compelling, groove-based foundation.

The band takes its name from the Bixiga neighborhood and the address of the studio where everything began — Estúdio Traquitana on Rua Treze de Maio 70. The diversity of São Paulo’s musical landscape is deeply embedded in their sound, while the band’s strong references to West African traditions are frequently highlighted by critics.

International press has described them as one of the most accomplished Afro-Brazilian ensembles of their generation. As The Guardian wrote:

“The energy and intelligence of Bixiga 70’s instrumentals are irresistible.”

In a recent review of their 2023 album Vapor, the newspaper also characterized the group as:
 “Afro-Brazilian favourites delivering infectious exuberance.”

On stage, Bixiga 70 performs as a tightly connected unit — a band that builds momentum layer by layer, placing groove, interplay, and rhythmic intensity at the center. Their concerts draw in audiences from across genres, whether they come from jazz, global music, Brazilian traditions, or more club-oriented sounds.

The current lineup includes musicians such as Amanda Teles, Cris Scabello, Cuca Ferreira, Daniel Nogueira, and Simone Sou. On this tour, they perform music from Vapor, an album that expands their sound with deeper synth work, new textures, and more experimental elements while staying true to the core of their identity.

On April 9, Bixiga 70 comes to Cosmopolite — a concert for anyone drawn to afrobeat, Brazilian music, rhythm-driven expression, and modern large-ensemble sound. storbandlyd.
